Apple Inc. on Tuesday lifted the curtain on watchOS 26, its next-generation operating system for Apple Watch, at the annual Worldwide Developers Conference.
Set to roll out later this year for devices running watchOS 10, the new software brings a redesigned Liquid Glass interface across Smart Stack, Control Center and app navigation. Notifications and in-app menus now feature translucent elements that adapt to background imagery and ambient light.
A standout addition is Workout Buddy, an AI-driven coach that delivers real-time motivation during exercise and tailors feedback using past activity. The update also introduces context‑aware Smart Stack Hints that surface relevant actions based on time of day and sensor readings.
Messages on the wrist gain a live translation feature, enabling users to read and reply to texts in multiple languages. Apple has also added a one‑handed Wrist Flick gesture to dismiss alerts, silence alarms and manage incoming calls without tapping the screen.
The Photos watch face receives a boost, displaying Liquid Glass numerals that improve legibility of user snapshots. Music and Podcasts now automatically launch recommended playlists when a workout begins.
For quick notes, a new Notes app lets users create, view and unlock memos right from their Apple Watch. The feature syncs with iCloud, ensuring access across all Apple devices.
Not all watches will support watchOS 26. Apple confirmed compatibility with Apple Watch Series 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10; Apple Watch SE (2nd generation); and both Apple Watch Ultra models. Installation requires pairing with an iPhone 11 or later running iOS 26, rendering older iPhone models ineligible.
The first developer beta of watchOS 26 is available now, with a public beta slated for July. Apple plans a broad release before the holiday season.
